Now that summer is in full swing and the crowds are at their peak inside Zion National Park, it’s the perfect time for a reminder of the importance of Leave No Trace principles. Whether you’re exploring inside the park or around the lesser-known surrounding area of East Zion, following these guidelines helps ensure that the landscape remains unspoiled for future generations.

The core 7 Leave No Trace principles are:

  1. Plan ahead and prepare
  2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces
  3. Dispose of waste properly
  4. Leave what you find
  5. Minimize campfire impacts
  6. Respect wildlife
  7. Be considerate of other visitors

While these practices are essential to caring for the environment, social media has added a new layer of impact on the world around us. As we share our adventures on platforms like Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, it’s important to consider the additional Leave No Trace principles created specifically for social media. Here’s what they are and how you can apply them during your visits to Zion National Park and East Zion:

Social Media Leave No Trace Principles

1. Tag thoughtfully

When sharing your incredible experiences in Zion or East Zion, it can be tempting to pinpoint the exact location for your followers. However, specific geotags can lead to an influx of visitors to remote areas, causing overcrowding and potential damage to trails and ecosystems. Consider using broader tags like #ZionNationalPark #EastZion and #EastZionAdventures. This approach not only protects these fragile places but also encourages exploration of the entire region rather than over running a single site.

2. Be mindful of what your images portray

Capturing that perfect shot is part of the adventure, but it’s important to think about the message your photos send. Avoid sharing images of yourself or others in prohibited areas or engaging in activities that can harm the environment, like going off-trail or disturbing wildlife. Zion’s beauty should only be shared responsibly. Let your photos and behaviors inspire others to respect and preserve these places.

3. Give back to the places you visit

Every visit to Zion National Park and East Zion is an opportunity to contribute to their preservation. Always pack out all your trash and, if possible, pick up any litter you encounter along the way. If anything, highlight your cleanup efforts in your social media posts. Simple actions like these can make a significant impact on keeping these areas pristine. Leave these places better than you found them, and encourage others to do the same.

4. Use your platform to advocate for responsible outdoor recreation

Raising awareness is the number one way to educate others about Leave No Trace. When showing photos of Zion’s amazing landscapes on social media, be sure to also share the Leave No Trace message. Share tips on how to protect the environment and examples of responsible behavior. By educating your audience, you play a vital role in fostering a community that values and protects this incredible region.

Visiting Zion National Park and East Zion is a privilege that comes with the responsibility of stewardship. By integrating general tags, sharing the Leave No Trace principles, and showing your own responsible behavior, you help ensure that Zion National Park and East Zion remain as breathtaking and unspoiled as they are today.
